Mia's 5 and Happy Fathers' Day!

Our Mia is five! Five years old is a big deal around here. It's the year you are officially allowed to have makeup, the year you are allowed to have a pet (though we will be waiting until construction is finished this time), it is the year in which you move from being a preschooler to a school-kid, it's a Big Deal!

This year, Mia had her birthday party at Pump it Up the week before her actual birthday, since she shared her big day with Fathers' Day.

On the actual day, we spent the morning searching out chocolate chip pancakes. It appeared many many others had the same idea, so we stopped at Starbucks instead and moved the pancake feast to lunch in order to make it to church on time.

Presents in the afternoon, a few phone calls, a pizza dinner and a double-decker cake finished off the day for both Mia and Patrick, stuffed to the brim with sugar and love.

For Mia, this was the epitome of greatness. After watching almost all of her preschool friends turn 5 throughout the year and feeling a bit left behind, it was finally HER TURN! Waiting is really really hard when you're not quite 5 and you count every month until you get there.

Patrick was very gracious for sharing his day (and his cake) with Mia, and enjoyed the homemade picture frames from the girls as well as the chance to spend all day together as a family.

Happy Father's Day to a Great Daddy!

And Happy Birthday to my Mia Bug!

Laney the Mischevious

If you had asked me a year and a half ago, I would have told you my Mia was our difficult child. She was always busy, always moving, always contradicting us and often running away from me to avoid leaving wherever we were (park, school, friends' houses).

Well, I was wrong. Mia is not sneaky. Sneakiness adds a whole other dimension to trouble making that I didn't know about except from first-hand experiences which of course, were not viewed from the same perspective. (You see, I was the sneaky child in my family growing up.)

These past 6 months, Laney has really pushed the envelope in the Sly, Cunning, and downright Messy categories. But this past week, in one single day, she made newsworthy strides in pushing Mommy to the limit.

In the morning, things were moving slowly. I finally got Laney upstairs to get her dressed for the day. After making hers and Mia's beds, I put out two dresses for her to choose from and went in my own room to make my bed. When I went in to check on her, she had smeared pink lipstick EVERYWHERE. Similar to the Desitin Incident, it was literally EVERYWHERE. On the air conditioner, her bedspread, the beds, the floor, and the glider. Not having the patience to grab the camera, I just got angry, grabbed wipes and got her to help me wipe off the wood surfaces and the air conditioner. I took the cushions off the glider and googled "lipstick stains". I put on a movie downstairs in the living room and got started on the stain removal process.

OK, THEN. While I was slaving away at the cushions, muttering frustration under my breath, Laney leans over the couch and spits a white goopy spit ball into my hand. Having seen this before, I knew what it meant. Laney had pulled the stuffing out of the couch cushions and was chewing on the stuffing. Oh joy. Well at least I could put most of it back in and fluff up the pillows without much trouble.

So, after fixing the couch and getting about half of the stain out, we had some semblance of a regular day - running errands, eating lunch, and attempting a quiet time for Laney which was again unsuccessful for the 4th day in a row.

After quiet time, Mia and Laney were playing together in the living room and I hear a small choking sound, followed by Mia screaming "MOMMY! MOMMY! Laney ate a Penny!" Of course I hurried in - Laney was OK, breathing but with tears in her eyes, and Mia described the situation. Evidently, Laney put a penny in her mouth, choked on it, managed to get it out and somehow swallowed it. All in about 3 seconds. The after-hours doctor on call told us that although pennies are no longer poisonous, if it didn't manage to find its way out in 2 days we would have to get Laney an x-ray to make sure it wasn't causing issues in her digestive tract. So, yep, we had to become poop archaeologists for awhile. Thankfully it came out the next afternoon and we avoided a trip to the hospital and any subsequent medical procedures.

But PHEW! What a DAY!

She's turning 3 in less than 2 weeks - it will all end then, right?

Back from the Beach!

Ahhh... we're back from Myrtle Beach. What a great week. More writing to come, but in the meantime, here are Mia and Laney loving it!

At the last minute, we decided to take a vacation to the beach in early June. We traded in our 2008 Orlando timeshare that we'd had hanging out there in the trading site and after several attempts, managed to find an equal trade in Myrtle Beach. Ecstatic that we were able to trade for something on the beach that fit between our already scheduled events: birthday parties, swim lessons, camp and the like, we had NO IDEA how lucky we were.

Marriott's OceanWatch Villas in Myrtle Beach were a true haven! The place completely caters to kids with a whole pool area dedicated to them. The pool is a zero entry pool, there are fountains and spilling buckets of water, a water slide, a poolside snack bar and drink bar (Thank you for all the Virgin Pina Coladas, honey!) and my mom was able to come down for 2 days to play as well! There were crafts and activities for the kids in the mornings for rainy or sunburned days, Dive-In movies at night, live music, and of course, the beach! It was just perfect in every single way.

Our villa had two bedrooms (one King suite and one with two Queens for our little princesses), a kitchen, living room, balcony with room for breakfast, and of course all the amenities - again, just plain WONDERFUL and everything was NEW. Our balcony was situated on a corner so while we had breakfast out there we enjoyed a view of the beach and a large house under construction, which we watched with the interest and intimate knowledge that only a homeowner also currently under construction would understand. ("Honey, is that hardibacker or drywall dust that's creating that cloud over there?" "Neither. See the walls? They are putting up the Hardiboard panels on the outside! Cool!")

Anyway, it was a vacation we were very blessed to get to have, and we do hope to return there in a few years for another go.
